Gary Graham: Looking Back to Look Forward

Time, place, materials, shelter. The essential elements that enable us to take root, find community, and gather ourselves during challenging times. Folded into this equation is the very notion of meaningful work, true purpose, and the myriad ways that we approach craft and the organization of workspace.

In the spirit of Shaker simplicity and cultural materiality, designer Gary Graham has ‘looked back to look forward’ with his recent historical narrative/fashion installation project created for the Hancock Shaker Village in the Berkshires. Focusing on the metaphoric and structural possibilities of the iconic Shaker cloak and pared-down silhouettes, Graham’s marriage of textile research and his signature handwork process provides a restorative view on the timeliness and lasting value of the Shaker production ethos.

In a light-infused period room of the dormitory-like Brick House of the 1830’s, the Shaker principles of equality for all permeates the artifacts, materials, and tools that Graham has highlighted. Not only do these latest pieces build on the designer’s past experiences with furniture, video, performance and sound, but they also lay bare the threads of future dialogues regarding who we are as humans seeking safe harbor, cocoon-like protection, as well as the cultivation of more equitable exchanges.

One wonders in turn how fashion might be more fruitful, less wasteful, more inclusive throughout all aspects of the process? Also, how maker hands around the world are typically deprived of the gift of slow fashioning as an act of self-worth and lasting sustenance. Perhaps the seeds of these ideas are embedded in the pockets of Graham’s garments and on the worktable of his repurposing process. Loving hands for the future is worth cultivating and exploring as part of this new terrain.
